Liberation Day 2015
This Saturday marks the 70th anniversary of the island's
Liberation. To mark this important event, Hettich will be closed
all day on Saturday 9th May.
When the island was first occupied in 1940, Hettich had already
been established for 40 years. Hettich's Tony Chinn remembers that
his grandfather and the shop's founder, Edwin Hettich still worked
in the business along with his daughters. In those days, jewellers
and watchmakers were often qualified opticians, and in many of the
archive photographs of Hettich, you can see a sign in the form of
glasses outside the shop.
This particular image shows Hettich during the Occupation with
German soldiers looking in the window. Hettich continued to trade
during the Occupation, but by Liberation Day only three silver
hatpins remained in stock.
